Course Description

This five-week workshop consists of 10 hours of synchronous learning conducted via weekly 2-hour webinars, self-guided pre-work, and 10 hours of application coaching exercises designed to integrate with the work you are already performing on a day-to—day basis so as not to create any additional workload. You will have opportunities to practice and apply coaching skills in a “coach and be coached” model. This workshop provides you with the skills, methods, and strategies to be an effective coach and mentor. Specifically, this training prepares you to define, distinguish, and apply coaching while differentiating coaching from counseling, mentoring, and supervising. You will identify the characteristics that encourage an effective coaching experience, demonstrate the application of fundamental coaching skills, and evaluate various models to determine most appropriate for specific coaching situations. You will also gain knowledge of ethical considerations associated with coaching relationship.

Course Outline

Week 1: Introduction to Coaching; Core competencies; coaching skills; 4 step coaching process; coaching for development

Week 2: Coaching conversations; ethics in coaching; professional practice; GROW model; coaching for performance improvement

Week 3: Getting to know your client: Co-creating the relationship; career coaching process

Week 4: Communication and Language for Effective Coaching

Week 5: Facilitating Learning and Results

Learner Outcomes

After successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

1. Distinguish between coaching, counseling, mentoring, and supervising.

2. Identify the characteristics that encourage an effective coaching experience.

3. Demonstrate fundamental coaching skills as outlined in competencies set forth by the BCC and ICF.

4. Evaluate various models to determine the most appropriate for specific coaching situations.

5. Demonstrate understanding of ethical considerations associated with the coaching relationship.
